What Is This Tool?
The Readability Score Checker analyzes your writing using three industry-standard formulas — Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog Index, and Coleman-Liau Index — to determine what grade level your text targets. Whether you're writing for a general audience, students, or academics, this tool helps you make sure your content is the right level of complexity for your readers.

Frequently asked
What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?+
60-70 is considered ideal for most general audiences (about a 9th-grade level). Above 70 is easy reading (Reader's Digest). Below 50 is challenging (academic papers). Below 30 is very difficult (legal/scientific writing).
Which score should I trust most?+
Use multiple together. Flesch Reading Ease gives the big-picture readability. Flesch-Kincaid Grade tells you the school grade required. Gunning Fog focuses on complex words. Coleman-Liau is based on character count, useful for technical writing.
Does the tool work for languages other than English?+
The readability formulas are calibrated for English. Results for other languages will be inaccurate.
Is my text sent to a server?+
No. All readability calculations happen in your browser. Nothing is logged or transmitted.
How can I improve my readability score?+
Shorter sentences (under 20 words), simpler vocabulary, fewer multi-syllable words, and active voice. Run your text again after edits to see the new score.
